Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT)

By , About.com Guide

Definition:

Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) is an electronic system that allows consumers the ability to authorize transfer of their government benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to a retailer account to pay for products received. Basically, if someone gets government benefits they can use EBT to pay for organic goods.

Currently, EBT is allowed in all 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Guam.

Why this matters to organic producers:

If you're an organic farmer who sells at Farmers' Markets, or through a CSA, then you can accept EBT payments for goods. Implementing EPT is an excellent way to make your products available to more consumers.
