The January issue of the Organic Integrity Quarterly is available now and as always, it's a great read, focusing on all of NOP's recent activities and status updates. This edition looks at the following issues:

  • Periodic residue testing
  • Organic integrity update: uncertified operations
  • New guides for organic operations
  • Cost share for farmers in 16 States
  • Organic trade update: Mexico
  • 2012 Ag Census

I thought the most interesting issue covered was the uncertified operations. NOP notes that in fiscal year 2012, almost half of the 279 received NOP complaints were about uncertified operations. According to NOP, most of these operations were simply selling, labeling, or representing products as organic without being certified and most operations said they had no idea that labeling their product as organic was a violation of the USDA organic regulations.

I think, and NOP also pointed out, that the sheer volume of complaints involving uncertified operations shows that better education and outreach is needed. That said, NOP is encouraging everyone who is involved in organics or an organic advocate to make sure that all operations are getting the help and info they need.
