A new study published in the Journal of Wine Research says that organic wines contain higher antioxidant and Reservatrol activity than conventional wines.
The study, conducted by a group of Italian researchers note that organic wines tested have significantly higher antioxidant and Resveratrol activity, with total polyphenol levels up to 30% higher than conventionally produced wines. If you're a grower or seller of organic wine, this could be a key selling point.
According to Mayo Clinic, resveratrol is one of the heart-healthy benefits of wine, and while most research on this benefit have been animal-based, research does show that resveratrol may help prevent damage to blood vessels, reduce "bad" cholesterol and prevent blood clots. However, the Mayo Clinic also points out that to get enough resveratrol to equal benefits, the average person would need to drink over 60 liters of conventional red wine every day. That's a whole lot of wine, so if organic wine contains more, that's great news for the industry.
