A recent research review of 130 studies was completed and the reviewers found that organic farms save, in general, 20% more than conventional farms on their energy costs.
The study shows strong evidence that whole farm energy use and energy efficiency are much more conservative when a farm is organic, although the researchers say there may be exceptions, such as poultry, hog and fruit sectors.
The study looked at more than simply farm fuel and electricity. Instead this study considers all the ways in which energy may be used on a farm. For example, embedded energy due to farm inputs were looked at, as were energy use across the entire food chain, including packaging, processing, distribution, storage, preparation and waste disposal.
