Organic cows rock. However, happy organic cows rock even more according to the September 27th Issue of Food Nutrition & Science. Food Nutrition & Science talked to Farmer Garrick Hall of Hall Jersey's in Cove, Utah, who has been using sand for his cow beds instead of straw. This same farmer also remodeled his cow houses for improved comfort. The result? "Increased milk production," says Hall.
This of course shows just one reason why organic and sustainable farming methods benefit everyone. Beyond organic simply being a healthier choice for the planet and consumers, animal-friendly farming can directly affect our food supply. In my opinion the National Organic Program doesn't address animal welfare enough. That said, they do address it to a point - a much better point than conventional animal care. Also, often organic livestock owners focus on other aspects of sustainability that do involved better animal care.
